In 332 BC, Alexander the Great marched his armies into Egypt and ushered in a new era of Greek-speaking pharaohs. While the indigenous Egyptian language, religion, and culture were maintained and respected, multilingualism began to characterize important communications that needed to reach the broadest possible audience in Ptolemaic Egypt.
